AFLPNG NEWS: MOZZIES GIVEN HELPING HAND FROM TELIKOM
Less than a week out from the IC 2011, Telikom
PNG has boosted the Mozzies cup hopes w ith a sponsorship of K30,000 to help the
team during their two weeks in Australia.
Walter Yangominga thanked Telikom for their
consistent support for the code and stated, “Telikom has been behind AFL since
2008 and the partnership has helped develop our juniors. We are grateful for
the sponsorship and it will give us a real boost at the International Cup.”
Telikom chief officer Arjay Mathur said the
company was pleased to see the sport make great progress in the three years of
their partnership and a strong performance in Australia would only reinforce
that view.

AFLPNG NEWS: MOZZIES & FLAMES READY FOR IC2011
With the International Cup 2011 set to kick
off on the 12th of August, the men’s team the Mossies and the Women’s team the Flames will
be out in full force, the Mossies defending their International Cup title and
the Flames for the first time taking to the international stage.
The Mossies are defending champions after a
come from behind win over New Zealand in the 2008 finals at
t he Melbourne
Cricket Ground, after finishing runners up to Ireland in 2002, and then to New
Zealand in 2005.
The Flames are aiming to make it to the
play off finals when they battle against the other five nations. the Flames
coach Pint Karr stated that “The Majority of the girls in the teaem have come
up through playing junior footy and represented the coutry touring Australia in
the U16 AFL Kurakum team over the years and this has helped them to play
without pressure”.
The cup is co-hosted by the Australian
cities of Sydney and Melbourne, with the teams departing throughout the week
prior to the tournament.

AFLPNG NEWS: FLAMES FAREWELLED AT AFTERNOON TEA
On Tuesday the 8th of August the
Australian High Commission hosted a farewell get together for the Flames. The
High Commissioner wished the girls and the boys all the best and challenged
them to see sports as a stepping stone to improve their life.
The Flames team made up of girls ranging
from ages 16-19 years that have come up through the ranks playing with junior
girl’s development programs run by AFLPNG.
“I have big hopes for the girls and am
confident they will be successful because many of the girls have played AFL in
the last 7 years in the girls development program” said AFLPNG’s Walter Yangomina.
A member of the Flames team, Vulaav Wartov,
who last year was a part of the Girls U16 Kurakum team to Australia, said that
the other teams will be big in size and much taller, but the freestyle way of
playing footy which PNG is famous for will be one of their weapons.
The Flames will be playing against Canada,
USA, Australian Indigenous side, New Zealand and Ireland.
