AFL PNG NATIONAL PROGRAMS

1. PIKININI PILAI RULES
This is a program for children (boys & girls) aged from 7 to 12 years old It is based on the Australian AFL Auskick program and is delivered in PNG Primary schools nationwide. It includes discussion about health and lifestyle rules. Competition below Under 12‘s is not generally pursued in PNG however, it is planned to introduce Gala Days in Primary Schools for under tens.

2. PJV RAITMAN
This is a program for boys and girls aged from 12 – 18 years old. It is a six week skills focused Program leading into local schools based competition. It includes an umpiring component and a lesson on running a small competition. It also has a strong focus on lifestyle rules including personal behavioral choices, commitment to community responsibilities and exemplary conduct.

3. SAVEMAN
Program for parent’s teachers and supporters to assist with umpiring, coaching and administration. Focused on a delivering a sustainable structure at community level for the on-going delivery of AFL programs, philosophies and competitions. The program is under review and it is expected that some interesting innovations will result from this review.

4. THE ANTS (Adult National Training Squad)
A recent addition to AFL PNG’s programs the ANTS is a squad of talented players aged between 16 & 21. The Squad creates the opportunity for our very best players to have additional specialist training and assessment The intention of the ANTS is to round off our Pathway; and better prepare and enable our best players to take up playing opportunities in Australia. In 2007 14 PNG players from the ANTS have been placed with Senior Football Clubs in Brisbane and Cairns.

5. De La Salle AFL ACADEMY PROGRAM
This program was introduced in 2005 and involves AFL PNG in selected 2-5 suitable candidates from outside Centres at 15-18 years old to be placed in school at De La Salle Secondary High School in Port Moresby. The boys school fees and costs, together with transfer fees and airfares, are paid by AFL PNG as well as offering general ongoing support. The Scholarship promotes excellence in education and sport and the AFL PNG lifestyle rules form an important part of the criteria for selection into the program and ongoing support.

The program has been expanded this year. A squad of 30 boys from DeLa Salle has been selected and they all receive additional AFL training. Every Wednesday afternoon they receive a skills lesson from AFLPNG Staff and twice a month they attend Pool and Gym sessions at Taurama Leisure Centre under AFLPNG supervision. Furthermore their curriculum now includes fitness, nutrition and time management sessions.

Nathan Napkin, the head of the PE department at De La Salle, and an AFL Port Moresby senior player, is also in charge of the AFL Academy program. He is assistant coach of the under 14 Binatangs and will travel with them to the Queensland State Championships and remain in Brisbane to attend the Sandgate High School AFL Academy of Sport for two weeks, to observe best practices and bring them back to PNG

6. AUSTRALIAN ELITE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
This program sees our very best young players selected at the highest level to take opportunities to play AFL in Australia.

The first scholarship was offered in 2002 when 2 young players including Des Kaumu trained with Eastlake’s in ACT. After those 2 more senior players spent 6 months with Coolangatta in Qld, Walter. In 2003/4 Alestar Sioni did 4 months Pre Season with Brisbane Lions.

In 2004 4 players played with Cairns City Cobras in Cairns, Queensland and in 2005 5 players will run with the Coolangatta FC on the Gold Coast while Des continues with the Cobras in Cairns.

We currently have 12 players, under scholarship arrangements playing football in Cairns and Brisbane.

We are seeking sponsorship and support partners to expand this program in 2007 and beyond.

7. OIL SEARCH NATIONAL PATHWAY
Key structural link from grassroots football at community level to National representation, then linking into AFL Queensland’s pathway through to the AFL. This is a unique program for PNG sport and in its first effective year in 2004 has shown exciting results, with players involved in AFL in Australia at various levels. It includes Lifestyle Rules as key selection criteria.
