The Gold Coast has
played host to the U14’s Queensland state AFL championships which took place
from the 27th to the 2nd of July. A strong PNG’s U14
junior side, the Binatangs, ventured south and endured the cooler temperatures
to make their mark on the junior competition in Queensland.
The PNG U’14s
boys’ side, the Binatangs arrived in Australia two days late and unfortunately missed their
first Monday game. After arriving in Brisbane
on the Wednesday, the boys travelled straight to the Gold coast and onto the
field for their first game against the Sunshine coast. In spite of their late
arrival the boys managed to hold onto the lead for most of their first game and
only losing it in the end by a mere goal. The following day
the Boys took on the Country Kookaburras and came away with a convincing win.
The final day of
the competition on Friday saw the boys come up against the Western Taipans and
again walk away with a win. The Binatangs
placed third overall despite their late arrival and missing one game.
Before returning
home, on the Saturday, the boys were then treated to an AFL game in Brisbane at
the Gabba. The boys watched the Brisbane Lions take on the Port Adelaide Power.
